Why did you decide to undertake this project?

We have faith in the decency and generosity of our fellow Calgarians and believe that, only together, can we meet the challenges of our time. We deplore the growing polarization in our public life.  We propose that a renewed story of the past, present and future of Calgary will illustrate how strongly our values, hopes and dreams overlap. A unified vision will foster compassion and encourage working together to build prosperity for all.

How will you proceed?

We are listening to, then summarizing, the views of our fellow citizens on what it means to be a Calgarian and what we want our city to be in the future. We will summarize what we hear as a renewed civic narrative. We will then work with allies who are also seeking to create a strong, unified future for our city to spread the renewed story of Calgary.

What are you hoping to achieve with this project?

We seek a renewed civic narrative in which all citizens can see hope and opportunity for an inclusive and prosperous city.

Is this project assuming that there is something wrong with Calgary municipal politics and current policy options?

We believe that having a range of policy options is good, but that divisiveness is not in Calgarians’ best interest going forward. Our economic and social challenges are best addressed when the broadest range of voices are heard and used to develop policy options that reflect the values that most Calgarians all share.

What are those common values?

We are currently gathering input from Calgarians to determine what those values and aspirations are. Share yours with us here.

You claim that your project is not a political undertaking but looking at the main organizers of C on P, it seems that most individuals would fit the so-called progressive side of the political spectrum. do you agree?

The future of our city and making sure it remains successful, sustainable and resilient is what brought us together, not a specific political ideology. We have a shared dream for Calgary to be a city that people want to live in and create a history in. We welcome a spectrum of policy and political viewpoints.

Why do you think story telling is an effective method to unveil what Calgarians feel and think about their city?

Telling stories is one of the most powerful means to influence, teach, and inspire. Storytelling forges connections among people, and between people and ideas. Stories convey the culture, history, and values that unite people. We believe that by asking questions that encourage stories, we can learn deeper beliefs than through survey questions.

What will you do to ensure the broadest range of voices are heard for this project?

We will use a variety of communications channels to encourage Calgarians to participate in the project including social and traditional media, calls for submissions, online sessions, and personal networking.

How would you define success for your project?

A new inspiring narrative of Calgary that resonates with many people.  A community engagement process that facilitates a shared understanding of this new narrative and captures the hearts and minds of those who read and talk about it.  Ultimately, the implications of that refreshed view of what Calgary is, and who we want to become, informs public dialogue, shapes expectations, and supports a path toward an intentional Calgary on Purpose.

How did you identify the participants for your Phase 1 Research Study?

We invited a range of key groups and sought input from various citizens who are deeply familiar with those groups. We created a starting point, informed by different perspectives, to build this new narrative and to see what speaks to people through the next phase. Read the full research report here.
