WHY
Calgary on Purpose narrows the gaps that separate Calgarians from each other.
Some of us are scared and angry and turning grievance into blaming, even hating others. This can lead to violence and undermine our democracy. Our past conversations underscored that no matter who we are all of us want freedom, a healthy environment, safety, love and strong community. We strive to inspire Calgarians to continually engage in respectful dialogue for the common betterment of our city.
How
We promote civil conversations about the future of our city.
Through respectful conversations, especially between people who have never met, we learn what and who makes Calgary the city we know and love. We discover the stories that bind us. We ask questions that spur Calgarians to think about this place they call home, what it means to them, and how it can be better.
Who
We are Calgarians filled with curiosity about, and affection for, the peoples who live here.
We envision a Calgary where Calgarians trust in each other and are optimistic of the future of our city.
We listen deeply and unveil the stories that tie us together.
Growing up I was frequently told to go back to my reserve, that I did not belong here, and so I was faced with the ugly reality of ignorance and the deep racism that lies in the foundations of this city and amongst many of its citizens.
